Senators who are generally supportive of the automotive industry weren't shy about criticizing the companies. "Their discomfort in coming to the Congress with hat in hand is only exceeded by the fact that they are seeking treatment for wounds that are to a large extent self-inflicted," Sen. Christoper Dodd said. "No one can say they didn't see this coming."

Obama has a point that if economic times were better, we should let them go it alone in Detroit however if we let them go under, it will be harder to rally for all of us. I'd like to hear from foreign contries and which businesses of theirs are struggling.

The theory is that if the US auto makers go bankrupt we will add to the unemployment but if they don't make cars we want and we shop foreign then there will be layoffs anyway so the management gets to walk with more money from a bailout. Either way they'll hit hard times.
