Thank you so much for your thourough and insightful review - I was having a hard time working up the nerve to spend $30 on a DVD, but your review convinced me to give this workout a try and I am so glad I did.  I love this workout!  I have only had it for a week, and have done it three times so far, and it is just awesome.  SO much fun, feels amazing (well, it burns like crazy, but in a good way!) and it is inspirational.  I am anxious to hear what you think of the cardio dance DVD, as I am considering giving that one a try as well.

You have a way w/ words… I loved reading your reviews!  Thank you.

I just got mine today (Mat - but I’m going to order the Cardio Dance, too).  I’m pregnant so I can’t do some of the moves on the floor but I love the arm WO.  Will let you know if I can keep the arms slim throughout pregnancy.  This is my second and last… the first, I did well but my problem areas are limbs (arms, thighs) and butt.  I swear, I get pregnant in my butt first.  Anyway, I can’t wait to pop this baby out and get onboard w/ the program.  Keep posting your results!  Very inspiring.

You made me laugh!  Keep it coming.  :)

Thank you thank you ecw.  Of course many women gain in their hips and butt with a pregnancy so you’re far from unusual.  I know I did!  While you may not keep the arms slim during the countdown to #2, you will keep them strong and that of course will help with picking up #1 if he/she is a toddler.  It will also help with the exercise effort after #2 is around.  Glad you’re here!

Hi supsonix, I have a 3rd part review turned into VentPark so I’m waiting for them to upload it.  Should be any day.  As for the 7lbs it was probably 2-3 weeks.  Are you using the dvd?

I searched the ‘net for any diet from her and I found a journalist in England commenting on it so I didn’t know if it was Tracy’s or not.  Where did you find the diet information?

I am a recent Tracy Anderson convert.  :)  I have always done the Firm DVD’s but got sucked in from that Oprah interview with Gwyneth.  I have been doing her mat workout for over a month and it defintely does work.  I also have her dance workout and can’t master even the first combo. to save my life.  I’ve tried and I can barely go 2 minutes.  She’s too fast.  I’m not horribly uncoordinated but this is really intense.  So I do my cardio on the treadmill/eliptical.  Are you able to have success with the dance dvd?  I know if I could do it I’d be in great shape!!  I also just ordered the post pregnancy dvd.  I had my 4th child a year ago and am struggling to lose this weight.  Have you gotten that one too?  Also, have you gotten her first dance workout dvd?

Hi Momof4.  Congrats on the improvement.  Isn’t it great?!  I don’t have the other 2 dvds.  I will post on the Dance Cardio very soon and since your registered at VentPark, you’ll get an email letting you know when I do.  Keep up the eliptical.

Well I’m still struggling through that dance cardio one, my feet cannot go that fast!  BUT I did get her post pregnancy DVD and it’s really good!!!  I so recommend this to alternate with the Mat workout.  It was really hard to do so I know I have many many weak muscles.  :)  I just wish I could get that dance one done.

After about three weeks of semi-regular sessions with Tracy’s Mat Workout, I was really loving it, and starting to see a difference in my body - yes, I am still carrying around fifteen extra pounds, but even so I was able to see more defintion overall, a sleeker look to my torso and arms, and a slightly lifted bottom.  I was so in love with Tracy’s Mat Workout that I decided to give both the Post Preganancy DVD and the Dance Cardio DVD a try.

The Post-Preganancy DVD is awesome - at 45 minutes it is slightly shorter than the Mat Workout, and it’s emphasis is on the abdominals.  About 25-30 minutes of the DVD is exclusively abdominal work, so anyone who felt the Mat Workout didn’t have tough enough ab work should check this one out.  The DVD finishes up with some side lying and kneeling leg and butt work as well as a briefer version of the same arm series from the Mat Workout, both with and without weights.  All in all, I don’t love it as much as I love the Mat Workout, but with it’s super tough ab work it is a great workout, and definitely not just for new mommies - I think any woman would benefit from it.

As to the Dance Cardio DVD, well, it is going to be great.  I say going to be great, because it is really tough to learn the routines.  As “momof4″ says above, it is hard to get your feet to move that fast!  However, it is a lot of fun, even if I feel totally goofy dancing around my living room trying desperately to follow along with Tracy.  I think the key to this DVD will be trying to learn one “combination” at a time.  I spent about an hour one afternoon this past weekend just focusing on the first combination - watching the tutorial at the beginning of the DVD - trying the dance sequence to tempo - going back and going over the tutorial again - trying the dance to tempo again - and by the end of the hour I was incredibly sweaty, but I had almost mastered the first combo.  My one gripe with the Cardio Dance DVD is that it should have been broken down into “chapters” so you don’t have to fast-forward through the tutorial and the actual dance routine to get to the different combinations.  Also, please note that this DVD may not be right for you if you have joint problems, as it is a true “dance” workout -lots of leaping, spinning, kicking, etc.  Otherwise, this DVD is every bit as fun and challenging as the Mat Workout, and while it is slightly frustrating in it’s level of difficulty, I know that if I give myself plenty of time to learn the different combinations, I am going to love it as much as I love the Mat Workout and the Post Pregnancy Workout.

I did the same as you.  i finally had moderate success as I was able to do the first 2 combos and then I quit b/c I couldn’t breathe.  :)   I’m just happy I was able to do the first 2.  Now i will try to learn the 3rd and hopefully within the next 2 weeks I can do the 3 combos to tempo.  It’s really hard keeping up with her which I barely do but some progress is good.  I’m ordering her first dance dvd as well so we’ll see how that one is.  I am anxious to hear what the reviewer has to say about the dance one as well.  Good luck to you!!!

Actually I just ordered her first dance DVD (2007) from her studio.  I called Heather.  She has some in stock there.  Her number is (818) 762-3133    It costs $35.42  I do have to wonder why other popular workout DVD’s are $15 or at most $20.  I wish hers were not this expensive…but now that I’ve been doing all 3 they really do work so it’s worth it.

I ordered all 3.  I’m 20 weeks pregnant but I’m doing the Mat and Dance Cardio.  I omit the floor leg work and abs on Mat but I do most of the standing and I must say, it’s tough.  I can do most of the arms but what gets me is the weighted part where you have to hold the weight straight out to the side at shoulder height while the other one is working.  I have to cry ‘uncle’ every time.  Soon, I shall master this!!!

As for Dance Cardio… I learned the first combo in about 15-20 minutes (just did the instructional over and over again then moved onto ‘up-to-tempo’).  Instead of going to Combo 2, I just did Combo 1 up-to-tempo about 2-3x in a row.  I have it now and by focusing on just Combo 1, I really got a great WO.  By knowing it thoroughly, I was really able to go all out (as all out as I can go w/ being pregnant!) which made all the difference in the world.

Next week, I shall do Combo 2.  I think this is the way to do it.  There are 8 combos and it’s too hard to swallow all at once… that is, unless you are a dancer and dance steps come quickly to you.

I am a one-sider meaning I can do one side but when she does the same combo going the opposite way, I feel dyslexic.  LOL.  But I love that this WO is challenging b/c I won’t toss it in the back of the closet.  I will actually use it for a long time.

The only thing about her method is that if you want to do it correctly, it takes 2 hours, 4-6x a week.  I know it’s an investment in myself but I’ve had pretty good success w/ other WOs that only took 20-45 minutes.  My plan is to incorporate her method at least 3x a week as I really love it, and supplement the other 2-3 days w/ my shorter but still kick-butt WOs.

Hopefully this will be instrumental in me shedding the baby weight quickly after the birth.

Love reading everyone’s experiences so keep it coming!

Hi ECW - I am so impressed that you are doing this while pregnant - kudos to you!  I worked out quite a bit during both of my pregnancies, and while I am still quite a bit, um, ahem, heavier than I wish I was after having two lovely kiddos, I am so convinced that regular exercise kept me soooo much more comfortable during pregnancy than some of my peers who did not exercise at all while pregnant.  Anyway, wow, I know how tough I find these DVDs even in my non-pregnant, semi-fit state, so I am just so impressed.

Thanks also for the advice on the Dance Cardio DVD.  I agree that taking it one combo at a time makes all the difference.  I’ve now almost mastered both combo 1 and combo 2, and I feel ridiculously proud of myself!  (Although I am sure I don’t look nearly as graceful as Miss Anderson!)

I am very impressed as well!!!!   I didn’t workout during my pregnancies and I know I could not have handled any of these workouts!  You’ll shed weight quicker.  It’s taking me over a year.  I have to ask though-do you guys weigh yourself?   Although I’m starting to notice the “lines” and people are telling me I look toned (which is the compliment I value over skinny) my weight is still 15lbs more than I’d like.  I finally mastered 4 combos yesterday but I am seriously sore today.  So I guess it does work.  :)   I’ll let you know how her first dance cardio DVD is when I get it.   I think my favorite right now is her post pregnancy one.  I wish I started doing that right after my baby was born.

My son is 16 months old, and I have not even begun to get back my pre-babies body . . .so 12 months is nothing! :-)  And like you, I totally wish I’d had the post-pregnancy DVD right after my son was born.  I imagine I would not be as heavy as I am now if I had Tracy to get me on the right path right away!

I know that I am probably carrying around at least 15 extra pounds, but no, I do not weigh myself.  I think it’s much more encouraging and self-esteem boosting to go by how your clothes fit, etc., and not by the number in the scale.  It can be so demoralizing if you’re already having a stressful day and the number goes up a bit!

Hi doerflinger & momof4!

Congrats on tackling Combos 1 & 2 and Combos 1-4, respectively!  I am so impressed!  It’s so much fun, isn’t it?

As for weighing yourself, I have two different views on it.  I know that you can weight “a lot” and still fit into tiny clothes.  For instance, my husband knew a body builder who weighed 150 lbs. but she wore a size 2.  She was all muscle and as Tracy A. says, her skin was glued to her muscles so there wasn’t much room for fluff.  I like to have a pair of jeans as my guide.  If it becomes a little snug, you know you’ve gotta go the other way.

On the other hand, I do like to weigh myself b/c it keeps me honest.  But if you have the mindset of wanting to be 100 lbs. when your body isn’t programmed to be that light, then don’t weigh yourself!  I know that I have a slight skeletal structure and I know what minimum and maximum weight I can be so I play around in that range.  Also, I’m old enough now not to freak out when I do gain some weight.  Oh, this is a hard questions… to weigh or not to weigh oneself.  I guess what I’m trying to say is, if the scale is going to drive your life, don’t weigh yourself.  But if you can use it as an objective measure to guide your progress, then by all means, use it.

momof4, I’m so glad to hear that you are getting lines!  When you see these lines appear, what I like to do is to try to make these lines deeper… meaning, squeeze the heck out of them.  From my experience, this is using isometrics, your own body weight to create long, lean lines w/o bulk.  I can’t wait to hear all about it when you learn all 8 combos.  I just did Combo 1 and I really did feel it all over my body the next day.  I can’t imagine what 8 combos will do for me!

Also, Q for both of you… are you guys doing 2 hours a day?  How are you guys using her videos?

Hi, Thanks for replying.  I feel better about the whole weight thing.  I have heard that once women gain muscle it does weigh more but you can still get into small sizes.  I do like my jeans size, although i’d like to drop one more, but hate my weight number.  I guess even though in Tracy’s workouts you only use 3lbs you still are gaining muscle even without the weights.  I forget that.
The dance was so great for me to finally master.  I was super sore yesterday and feel better today.  I wish she had a cool down though.  I just repeat the warm-up at the end.  I’m just going to keep plucking away at it and hopefully will see progress by the new year.
When you say you squeeze the lines do you mean during the moves?  I jsut hope my next summer all the flab is gone.  :)    So doing these workouts doesn’t leave you winded being pregnant?  I’m so impressed.  I always felt really awful when I am pregnant that even walking was bad.  .
Yes, I am doing 2 hours a day 5x/week.  Until I master her entired dance workout, I am adding the eliptical for 4 miles for the cardio (takes like 50 minutes).  So I alternate between her mat workout and post-pregnancy and then do the dance/eliptical.  Which is why I’d think the weight would shed.  Although-I don’t think my eating has been the best.  :)  All this working out leaves me hungrier.  Do you find the same?  How long have you been doing these workouts?

Even if I had two hours a day to myself, I don’t think I would be working out for two hours a day! :-)  I wish I was that motivated!  But since I discovered Tracy I have been trying to consistently work out for at least an hour every day during my kiddos’ naptime.  I’m kind of rotating between doing the Mat Workout one day, spending an hour or so on the Cardio Dance DVD one day, and then doing both the Post-Pregnancy DVD and about 15 minutes of the Cardio Dance DVD on another day.  I have a lot of other workout DVDs, and though none of them have ever captured my interest or shown me such results as Tracy does, if I just can’t face the plywood room I do something totally different (Bollywood Burn by Hemalayaa Behl is lots of fun, Indian Dance style cardio!).  And if I absolutely cannot squeeze a workout into my day, I do try to do about 30 minutes on the stationary bike I have in my basement after I get the kids to bed at night.

All I can say is that we three are totally committed exercisers!  momof4, I am so impressed that you are doing 2 hrs/5x a week!  Please keep us posted.  Really would like to track your progress for my own motivation.  :)

As for the lines… not during dance, but when you are doing the Mat video (I will use arms as an example), when she says don’t have dead arms, it literally means when stretching, feel like someone is pulling your arms out of your socket. When she does a move that flexes the biceps, try to make those muscles pop.  No going through the motions but using every opportunity to tighten and clench your muscles.  You will find that you may back track a little in progress as you will need to stop more frequently, but the results will be amazing.

This week, I’m going to tackle Combo 2.  Wish me luck.  I have Combo 1 down well.  Whenever she does a spin is where I get dyslexic.  Like I said, I’m a one-sider so I have to really concentrate in the beginning which way she is turning or I end up doing the same side.  Can you say lopsided?

doerflinger, I agree… I cannot commit to 2 hours a day.  I really believe that you can get a kick-a** body with 1 hour WOs.  But after the baby, I will probably do close to 2 hours to jump start the weight loss.

Oh, to answer the pregnancy-getting-winded question… no, not really.  I don’t get winded.  I’m in pretty good shape but I do fear that I may overdo it so I pull back a lot. Like when she jumps around, sometimes I just walk around or just lift my heels.  And on those days when I feel I’m too tired, I just rest.  :)  I have no problem just lying still!!!!!

It’s not easy fitting these 2 work outs in.  It literally takes me all day to do it.  I don’t think I could handle 2 solid hours in a row.  I’m so exhausted after her mat/post pregnancy ones.  I do those (alternating days) during my son’s morning nap.  Then I do the dance or elliptical during the afternoon nap.  I can only handle the first 4 combos so that’s only about 25 minutes I think.  But then I’ll do the other 25min on the elliptical.  I feel I need to do this b/c with 4 kids I do a lot of snacking and I just can’t change what I eat right now.  I’ve cut back a lot but I’m not one to diet.  I gained over 50lbs with this last pregnancy and everything hurt.  Now that I’m done having kids I just need to get in better shape and hopefully get rid of the flab.  It was hard last summer being at the pool and not liking how I looked.  It’s great to find this website b/c this also helps with motivation.  so keep  motivating me!!!  :)

Reviewer,
I just read your Dance Cardio review and I have to agree completely about how different her instructional is compared to the up-to-tempo version.  Steps do disappear and I swear, on the spin part (1st combo), I think she lifts the wrong arm on the turns which confused me greatly.  I think the inconsistency of her dancing from one side to another was hard for me.  So what I did was learn one side the best I could and then slowly learned the other side w/o the video (remember, I’m the one-sided girl).  Then when the music came on for the up-to-tempo, I didn’t really watch her but just went at it w/ what I learned.  If I messed up, who cares?  I just moved and jumped and hopped around.

I’ve yet to tackle Combo 2.  I plan on doing that tomorrow.  I do want to learn it b/c it is fun and totally different than the treadmill.  I will let you know how I fare w/ my pregnant belly but so far, so good.

Still working hard on the arm section of the Mat video.  That, by far, is my favorite right now b/c I can do it even w/ my growing belly.

Which informercial fitness products did you purchase?  I can’t wait to hear all about it!  You are a great guinea pig!  :)

Hi ecw!  Hey, since you love the arm workout, remember when you get 8-9 months and don’t feel like standing, you can do that routine sitting.  I know when my feet were torn up it made for a lovely sitting workout. !
Combo 2 is much easier than the first one but still death defying in terms of cardio.
Lest you all laugh at me I will keep my you-purchased-that? product under wraps for now.  :)

Hello everyone, Reviewer where is your dance review?  I didn’t get notified on it.  I’m anxious to read it and am relieved to read what ecw says about it.  Tracy does skip steps or something in the up-to-tempo part.  I barely go along and my form is lacking completely but I hope in time I’ll build up endurance so I get the moves down better.  She says in her 2007 DVD that the constant rotations of dance is what gives you the fast results and that the treadmill tends to give you long glute muscles that tend of life the love handles and not get rid of them.  So now I’m more encouraged to learn this darn dance DVD and work at it daily vs. whimping out and running to my treadmill or eliptical.  Now I’m quite curious as to your purchase….I’d probably get it!  :)

Hey Momof4, Yes the ‘VentPark Ranger’ has been slow to get the email out (could be today) but the review is up in the reviews park.  If you click on the top tab “HOME” you’ll go to the home page and them click on Reviews Park and it’s the second one down.

Can you elaborate on what she said about the treadmill and the glutes?  Did she say that too about elipticals?  I can’t imagine that on an eliptical (long glutes).  But what was she saying about love handles?

#40

momof4
says:

Yes, I will play it again and then relay what she says   “the worst thing you can do if you are trying to get a more lean long body is be in the gym on the eliptical over and over, pumping weights over and over using the same rotations over and over-all you are doing is over exercising the large muscles creating bulk.    If you want a longer leaner dancer body-don’t run at the gym-dance.  If you do the same repetitive motion over and over on an eliptical or treadmill,  you’re creating a long glute muscle that tends to push up the love handles.  So when people ask why they can’t get rid of their love handles, they are working the muscle in the wrong way.  You need to change your rotations all the time during cardiovascular work…which is what dance does.”
Another interesting thing she tells is of a study of 80 people who were to sprint a football field, 40 were professional athletes and 40 were every day exercisers who mostly used running for their cardio,  the 40 every day people didn’t burn 1 peanut m&m after sprinting the field, the 40 professional athletes burned the entire bag.  Shows most people are running and think they are running, but they’re not really running and engaging every single muscle.   I just thought that was interesting.
Sorry if this turned out to be a long reply.  :)

LOL.  As you were posting above, I was posting to you about sprinters on the other thread!
a) I agree with Tracy that repetition is not as ideal as changing up movement.  However, doing something is better than nothing.  Also a slight variation can make a difference.  Afterall, sprinters get in the blocks, take off, and run which is repetition but, each step is “unstable” as they are outside vs. on a predictable treadmill or other machine.  They also do a ton of non-sprinting exercises! Also ballet dancers everywhere in the world do plies, tendus, jetes, etc. every single class, but speed, standing on one foot, slight variation counts for alot.
b) love handles are fat so whether or not a glute muscle is pushing (don’t think I agree with her here) up into the obliques– the goal is to get rid of the fat and then there’s nothing to push up.
c) when she says change the rotations through cardiovascular and dance…again (in my other reply other vent) which dance?  I suspect most want a ballet dancer’s body and ballet cardio output is through resistance and isometric work.  The cardio Tracy is doing is really glorified 80’s aerobics and high impact.  Ballet dancers get to great bodies but never through high impact.  I would call it no impact during barre exercises and low to mid impact during center work jumps.  Ballet men have it harder doing lifts of women.
d) the m&m story…never heard that one but it goes to the general thinking that if you could have two clones with the same metabolic rate, fat ratio, etc. and have them say, take a ballet barre class and one did it with intensity and the other did it correctly in terms of technique but lacked intensity (as it focusing on maximizing each movement) the one doing it with intensity would engage more tiny muscles and make a bigger impact for their body.  But both are doing something and therefore making a difference.  There’s magic to working different angles with variety with unstableness plus a whole lot more.

Hi Everyone - Two things:  First, momof4, I’d love to hear what you think of the actual workout in the 2007 Dance DVD . . .how does it compare to the newer one, is it any easier to learn the combos in the old one vs. the new one, etc.  Second, although I’ve worked out every day, I haven’t done the Mat Workout since Sunday, and I have to say my back is aching and I feel sluggish and icky and puffier allover - I’m starting to get a little weirded out by the magic that is the Mat Workout - seriously, how is it so good?  It is just amazing.  I must return to the plywood room during baby boy’s naptime today! :-)

Hi!  doreflinger2006, when you said you haven’t done it since Sunday, have you done anything else?  I agree with you on the back, I don’t have any back aches now that I’ve been doing this but I didn’t know if that was more from the post preggo one.  Reviewer, I’m glad to hear your thoughts on what she says b/c you are in fact a real dancer.  B/f I would do the elliptical/treadmill to get cardio in.  But, for me, trying to master the dance DVD these last 2 weeks is so much more intense.  My legs/feet are just not that strong and hopefully will get stronger now (if I don’t kill myself of course).  Do you have dancer shoes like Tracy’s?  You mentioned you ordered shoes and I’m curious where she has those.  I just wear regular gym shoes and I don’t know if that’s good enough support for all the bouncing.  Let me ask your personal opinion, what do you think is a really good thigh toner move?  I have many trouble areas but my thighs upset me the most and I read somewhere Tracy said 100 plies is better than doing “something” that I can’t remember.  But I thought maybe if I could add an additional something b/c I don’t feel like her leg routine is strengthening me enough yet.  It’s so hard and my legs are weak but I”m use to squats/lunges/dips.  My thighs are really flabby and I’m beginning to wonder if the skin will ever even find a muscle in there.

For the 2007 dance dvd, to be honest I just watched it.  It’s interesting though b/c she has a longer interview and a behind the scenes thing.  This DVD has back-up dancers (2 are men and 3 other girls).  One of the guy dancers was interviewed and he said he is a professional dancer and this dance workout makes him breathless as well.  So I’m wondering how many breaks Tracy takes in filming these combos when the consumer is suppose to tackle all combos right in a row.  I wonder how many can.  Sorry, back to the DVD, she has different moves and the DVD is set up with a table of contents type thing so you can click on which dance combo you want.  Unlike her new one you have to forward.  She also has an arm/ab routine that is similar to her new DVD’s but you are dancing through it actually.  I will  learn a few of the combos and let you know by next week.  I do like that she has other dancers in it.  But no one plays the “if you are a beginner, follow this person” part.  It’s a lot of bouncing from what I’ve seen but some cool moves.  Now when I see the plywood room, just makes me crack up!  :)

Sorry I forgot to mention–I don’t know what shoes she’s wearing but they don’t look much different than a New Balance style.  But I can tell you, shoes won’t get you through that routine.  I say there are high heel women and flat shoe women and all of us flat shoe women have feet/ankles that will not like her Dance Cardio dvd.

The shoes I ordered won’t work at all for her Dance Cardio but I’ve got something up my sleeve on ‘em!!

In terms of the thighs…if yours are weak keep at the routine consistently.  If, like mine, they’re covered in some flab then we have to take a multi-prong approach of the big 3: resistance (Mat), some kind of cardio, and diet, diet, diet.  Tracy’s comment about plies — I think it might have been in relation to squats.  Plies in a 2nd position turn the legs out from the hips so you are getting more all over the thighs.  The squats get the front and back.  However, there are plenty of actresses that do those suckers and get great results.  The key is not to take the bootie below the knees which results in extreme bulking.  That’s why so many Modern dancers (think stage as in Martha Graham style vs hip hop) have big ole thighs because they are going deep to the floor and back up over and over.

Hi,

I just received my DVDs yesterday from Amazon.  I purchased them based on the extensive review and comments here at VentPark - thank you!
I only had a chance late last night to preview the Mat Workout DVD.  I really like the music and that the moves seem choreographed to it.  (Which was something I like about the “Classic Firms”created by Anna Benson.)  While there’s not much cuing, I’m guessing long term that’s a good thing.  I  hope to start using the workout tonight.

The Reviewer’s comments about improvement in the arms is what sold me.  I also dug out some Curves arm wraps that I had bought from Avon ages ago and will use them to combat gravity.

I, too, took dance class/instruction for many years, well into adulthood.  I stopped and kind of miss it.  While the reviews say the Cardio Dance has the most difficult learning curve, it might be the challenge I need - like some people use a 5K race as motivation for running each day.

Again, thank you for the indepth reviews of this series.  I hope everyone is still enjoying these workouts.

Hey, congrats on your purchase.  I think you’ll enjoy it.  I did not like the no cuing initially, b/c I’m use to tradition workout dvd’s.  But now that I do it so many times a week you end up memorizing it all, including what she says.  ha!  Let us know how quickly you see results to keep me going!  I also have her other DVD’s and alternate them-I’m a big fan of her DVD’s.

When I saw the new posts today I realized how much I’d been missing the dialogue we’ve all been having about these DVDs . . . so here’s my little update:

First, yea for little or no cuing!  Like momof4 says, when you’re doing these workouts several times a week, you don’t want to hear the same annoying chatter over and over and over again - I love Tracy’s cuing, or lack thereof . . .there are a couple of exercise that I think she could give more in depth directions for, but otherwise I think the amount of cuing is perfect.

Second, what is happening to my arms?  I swear I have not lost any weight at all (well, maybe a pound or two) but my arms are totally different than they were a month or so ago . . they are slimmer, there is more definition . . . they are looking really great, and I am so, so pleased.

Finally, I’ve been working at the Cardio Dance DVD and it is starting to function like a real workout for me.  I have learned the first four combos now (not perfectly, but well enough to not feel like a clumsy oaf while doing them) and I am able to go through them with only one or two pauses to “catch my breath” - I have been having a problem with pain after completing the workout, especially in my shins.  Yesterday I made an effort to make all of the jumping/leaping/high-impact moves a little smaller and gentler and I was really able to keep up with Tracy and had a lot less pain - I wasn’t jumping as high or leaping as far as Tracy does, but I think that making it a little less intense actually helped me get a better workout.

Does anyone have a shoe they really love or reccomend for the Dance Cardio workout?  I need athletic new shoes anyway, and while I usually favor all-terrain running shoes, I know they are not the right shoe for this cardio dance (hhmmm, maybe this is why I’m having the shin pain?)

I completely agree about the arms.  After the initial 7 lbs weight loss, I fluctuate from losing/back up with 3 pounds however I am so much thinner in my arms, ribs and legs.  And much shaplier.

I have to say I missed the dialogue too b/c now after hearing what you say about your arms, I want that.  Are you doing anything different then what she does?  I can’t say the same about mine yet.  I’m just frustrated on the weight loss/gain.  I’d like to take off 10-12 lbs but I also realize that doesn’t get rid of flab per say.

I am still nursing my baby boy (16 months) so I am still stupidly hungry all the time, even though he’s down to nursing only two or three times a day.  . . so, I really have not cut back on calories too much, although I have been trying to cut back on late-evening snacking and that after-I-get-the-kids-to-bed glass of wine (or two, or three).  As a result of these small changes and the consistent exercise, I have lost a few pounds, but I haven’t really been trying to lose weight . . .I think if I was trying to diet right now my results would be much greater.  However, even though I haven’t really lost much weight since I became a Tracy-convert, I have definitely seen a change in the overall shape of my body . . .longer, leaner lines, less flabbiness, more definition, etc.  I think for me the magic has been the consistency with which I am working out . . .I’ve been doing a Tracy workout at least five times a week . . .I don’t do anything to alter her arm routines . . .I’ve just been following them pretty closely, using two-pound weights (I’m not ready for three pounders yet!).  I am amazed that I have been as consistent as I have been, but there is something about Tracy that keeps me coming back for more!  Now if I could quit eating like such a pig . . .! :-)

I will have to go back and check that out.  But I am seeing lines actually….I still have more flab then I want but I guess I just need to keep this up 5 days a week.  Doerflinger, do you do mat 5x/week?  Plus Dance?  Or just an hour a day?  I was told again that I look toned so it is doing something good.  Do you guys worry about the scale?  Or more the jean size?  I’m trying to forget the scale but it’s hard.  I’m going to commit to 5x/week up until Jan 1 and see if I can get down one more size.  :o)   Are you guys only doing Tracy and nothing else?

Okay, found this on the Net (below) and it is the answer to our questions!  I think we’re all incredulous that these DVDs and being faithful to doing them could make that much difference.  We knew the stuff below (we’re not stupid) but seeing it in a picture and then thinking about it on our bodies :) is the explanation to why we’re feeling and looking leaner and toned, getting great comments, but not seeing the scale drop.  So yes, it does start right away…

One pound of muscle and one pound of fat are NOT the same size.

If I place one pound of muscle on a scale and one pound of fat on a scale, they will both weigh one pound. The difference is in total volume. One pound of muscle may appear to be the size of baseball; one pound of fat will be three times the size and look like a squiggly bowl of Jell-O.

Why is it that we can lose sizes, yet the scale remains the same? Because muscle weighs more than fat…

Muscle is a denser tissue and thus takes up less room than an equal weight of fat. That’s why it’s possible to lose inches but show no changes in scale weight. Having more muscle means you have a more desirable body composition, or fat-to-muscle ratio.

You may still weigh the same, but your body will look different, smaller, better and tighter. Though it may take you a few weeks to see measurable changes, you begin to put on muscle and burn calories from the moment you start exercising.

The muscle weight you gain also beefs up your metabolism which in turn, helps you to burn off more fat. Talk about a win-win situation! (You won’t jiggle as much at your ideal weight, either.)

Thanks for posting that Reviewer!  That makes sense and I needed to be reminded.  I like the part about muscle looking like a baseball and fat looking much bigger and jello.  I hope the flab magically disappears!!  :)    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  And since we “do” workout so much and hard we deserve to enjoy this holiday!  ;)

To answer momof4’s question, I am only doing about an hour of Tracy a day, kind of rotating between the cardio dance, the mat workout and the post pregnancy workout, with my goal being to workout six days a week.  And when I said my arms looked better, they do, but they’re still not teeny-tiny teenage girl arms - they’re definitely still 36-year-old mommy arms, but they’re definitely getting better with every pass through the arm routine!

Hey everyone: I just wanted to thank you all for talking about the tracy DVD. I just ordered mine. It’s coming wednesday and I’m so excited. I’m just turned 31 and, while thin and in shape, nowhere near what I looked like at 24. I have a meeting in Detroit in 7 weeks where I’ll see a newly divorced ex (from when I was 24!) and I’m hoping to look better this time around. I’m on sebatical and thankfully for once do have 2 hours of time to devote each day. No children yet (but maybe that will change soon!). My question is about how much and how intense of cardio do you need to do to compliment the mat workout? A half hour of dance aerobics? An hour walk? Diet wise should protein be increased?  Any tips from any of you who have had success would be totally welcome!

Hi marlowedh,
Here’s my input to your question and I’m sure others will give their input.  I’d do the Mat workout out 7 days a week and if you can’t get through it at first, rest, take a break, but make it your goal to complete it that day.  A brisk walk for 30 minutes is great.  Protein is good with quality carbs (veggies, fruits) each meal.  If you go to the Reviews Park here and read my Part 3 of the Mat workout at the end I list a bunch of no-no foods to avoid which will help your efforts tremendously.
The main thing is to keep doing it.  Yesterday a friend I hadn’t seen for 2 mos. freaked out and litterally went on and on for a half hour saying how great I looked and how I looked a decade younger and wanted to know everything I was doing!

Congrats Reviewer, that’s awesome to really know your work is paying off.  Hi marlowedh, congrats on your purchase.  It is an addicting workout and honestly you do see results.  Ideally Tracy wants you to do the mat and dance every day 4-6x/week.  It’s taking me a bit of time to get the dance down but I am now up to 30 min (which I think is 5 combos).  So I alternate the mat with the post pregnancy workout 5-6x/week and then tackle the dance every day for 30.  if I am not up for the dance, i do elliptical or treadmill.    doerflinger2006, how’d you like her post pregnancy?  I have seen a change in my arms as well now.  Thanks to Reviewer’s post, I am no longer checking the scale as much as before.

Hi, again!
I have done the Mat workout twice since receiving it this past Thursday.  Couldn’t squeeze it in yesterday.  I had to break it up this morning doing the standing part only, I’ll do the floor work tonight.  I have been trying to get 30 minutes on the treadmill or elliptical, because I don’t think learning the Dance routine at first is intense enough for the results I’d like to see yesterday, lol!  I used my Bally neoprene arm wraps but I forgot to bend foward for the unweighted arm segment.  I used 2lbs today, but may try 1lb tomorrow as my arms are killing me even as I type.  The legs not so much, but maybe because I didn’t do the floorwork yet?

For someone who is not a morning person and quite resistant to morning exercise, I find this workout to be very serene at 6:00 a.m.  I don’t have to worry about jumping around, etc., which I can do later in the day during cardio.   This workout really reminds me of “dancer’s workout” which I think the Reviewer might have mentioned.  When I used to take dance classes, we always used pretty much the same of 30 minute warmup at all sessions with limited cuing and all the arm work was without weights but focusing on the energy of the limbs, etc.

As for eating - ha!  I have been trying to get back on the wagon at Weight Watchers but it’s been a struggle.  Right now I’m just trying to watch portion size, snacks and mindless eating.  I’m hoping that focusing on following Tracy’s workout method for 5-6 days a week will bring the eating into line, meaning I feel so good from the workout that I won’t be reaching for carbs and snacks to feel better.

Cheers,
videochick

Thanks Reviewer for the wonderful Mat review…it made me laugh really hard a few times!   And also motivated me to go ahead and get the mat workout when I had pretty much decided to put it on the backburner…  I can’t wait to receive it now, it was shipped today!

Thanks momof4…to leaving the info on the first dance dvd.  I contacted Heather and it was shipped on Friday…

I’ll post a quick background as I’d love to post updates and kit with how y’all progress using the TA method.  I think it could definitely help keep me motivated!

My story is probably a cliche…been doing Firm for years.  Needed a change and also wanted more of a “yoga” type body and started doing yoga, Bar Method and Fluidity this year., some ellen bar pilates fusion workouts.  I was happy with the change in pace and the difference in my body, but kind of resigned myself to the fact that I would never lose the last five pounds and be that next size down that I have been trying for forever…

Then I saw TA on Oprah with GP…. Wow, they both basically have that Jennifer Aniston type body I would die to have.  I did research online and eventually found my way here and decided to go for it!   Did you y’all read about how TA changed Harper’s Bazaar writer’s body from size 8 to 4 in four weeks?

I know it’ll take some time before I’m up to speed and able to do both the workouts but I’m really excited to get going!

A question…should I go out and get lighter weights than the 3#?  should I start with 1# and work my way up?

Welcome!  I find this motivating as well to keep this up.   I have to say, I’ve been spending too much time letting the scale determine my progress when I have actually gone down a jean size and fit quite comfortably in.  Maybe another month and I’ll be down to my goal size, even though that number on the scale irritates me.  Thanks to Reviewer for her post, I am not focusing on that anymore.  :)  I’ve been doing her workouts since Sept. and I do try to get 5x/week.  Recently I’ve added the dance cardio b/c it’s just so intense and hard for me.  But on a good day I’ve managed the 5 combos (30min) and then I’ll do 30 on the elliptical or treadmill.   I have a library of Firm DVD’s (love Allie) and love them all but I rather have a long lean look vs. bulk so I’m giving this a shot.  Plus I got a little tired of the tradition leg workouts (squats/lunges/dips) b/c it was not getting rid of my flabby thighs (it’s the worst part on me) and Tracy’s rotations are unique and I do see lines on my legs so they do work.  Just need to get the flab off.    I do 2 lb for Mat workout (and it’s actually still quite hard for me) and I do 3 lb with her pregnancy one (b/c it’s not a long arm workout).  I use to do up to 10 lbs with the Firm and can barely do 3 with Tracy.  It’s just a very different, awesome arm workout.  Like they all say, get the move down then add the weight.
I have a question for you all…do any of you do push-ups or dips?  That’s all weight baring so I’d assume would not bulk you up.

How’d you like fluidity?  I almost bought that to get those dancer legs but then saw Tracy on Oprah.  I love dancing and thought it’d be more fun to do this workout.  Do you recommend fluidity?    So you could tell a difference in your body?  I did not read in Harper’s Bazaar but thanks for sharing b/c it only motivates me!

Again, Reviewer/doerflinger2006 are you still consistently sore after the leg/arm workout?

Hi, I’m the anonymous from above.  I must have accidentally hit the box that makes me anonymous.  Oops.

Yes, I feel the same way about you as the Firm.  I was frankly bored with them after doing them for so long and I don’t think all those lunges and squats were agreeing with my hips, thighs(bulky) and knees (crunchy sounds) anymore!

I have pics of myself from last summer, after several months of Firm workouts and pics of myself from this past summer after several months of Fluidity workouts and there is definite difference.  My arms are much more tight and thin looking even though I didn’t use any weights!  (fluidity uses pushups, dips and band for arm work)  Overall a more toned proportioned look…

So YES I am huge Fluidity fan.  I love Bar Method as well…Fluidity is a more intense full workout due to being able to hang on the bar and use your whole body for almost many of the moves.  It did tone up my thighs and lifted the seat.  It brought me from a size 8 to a very comfortable size 6…

still I wish I was thinner and had a little more tone/tightness all over.

Before I heard about TA, I was just going to add some cardio to my barre/yoga routine to see if that made a difference.  It probably would have, but honestly ways to keep myself motivated to work hard is the biggest hurdle for me.  TA’s method promising result if you follow the “plan” is what will help keep me going through the holidays and winter to hopefully get closer to my goals by next spring :)

Thanks for the response!  I really hope I get my dance dvd today!  I’ll go get the 2# weights.

Hi, everyone -

I think trying to start this routine Thanksgiving week was a bit ambitious for me.  Had to work late last night and didn’t get to finish the floor segments of the Mat Workout.  But I at least managed to get in about 3 miles walking to one of my job sites.
Did the standing part again this morning (which clocks in on my dvd at about 41 minutes).  Hopefully, will be home with enough time to complete the floor and some cardio.
This morning I tried 1lb weights and I think 2lbs are what I will use for the time being.
I know there has been a lot of controversy on the web about Tracy’s method and comments, but I have to say the original thing that sold me on checking into these workouts were the comments about the upper body workout and particularly the arms.  I carry my weight in the top half of my body, my arms are the bane of my existence, but most workouts focus on the hips and thighs.  Then reading the Reviewers post sealed the deal.  Don’t get me wrong, I could use some firming up in the lower half, but I can live with their shape and size, if only I could have the arms I want!  So, yes, teeny tiny ballerina arms are my holy grail.

I too was a die hard Firmie - have all of them except the new Wave system.  And they are all collecting dust except for the “Classics” and I’m toying with giving/selling them off.  For some reason I’ve clicked with Tracy’s dvds like I haven’t in a very long time.

Just for informational purposes, I’m 45, 5′6″ about 170lbs.  Short torso, long legs, have a modified apple shape.  Very beefy arms, broad back, but do have a slight indention of a waist.  No kids but have a pooch.  I will take some initials measurements this weekend.
If I don’t get to check in tomorrow, everyone have a lovely Thanksgiving!

Cheers,
videochick

HI videochick!

I was totally the same with the firm: a die-hard firm believer, but I have a really small frame and the weights gave me HUGE shoulders. HUGE. I’m expecting TA mat tomorrow. So excited! I have the opposite problem: thin thin upper body and then somewhere between my belly-button and above my knees the problem begins.  I’d love nice sleek arms instead of skinny ones: but I’m really hoping for some help with my bottom and what my roommate poetically calls “the under-butt.” Seriously, sometimes i look in the mirror and think my bum looks like two saggy  balloons filled with lumpy oatmeal. Not Cool.
I’m going to be starting the workout Thursdays- doing measurements tomorrow to begin keeping track of how much and how quickly it helps.

Good luck to everyone staying fit as the holidays begin!!!

I’ve forgot to mention…in my insane effort to multi-task and not skip my TA workout I bought a 15″ TV/DVD player (slot on the side of the TV for the DVD) all in one sleek unit. Just plug in and go.  I put that by my regular TV and then can watch the news, TIVO shows, etc. on my big TV as I do my Mat workout on the 15″.  I don’t need the volume anymore for the Mat.  Now I really don’t have an excuse to miss–not that I would have.  As we all have said, somehow this is an addictive-look-forward-to it workout.

Hi everyone,

Finally got to the 2nd combo of Dance.  It was so much easier than the first combo!!!!  I did the Mat up to arms and b/c I’m pregnant, I cannot do most of the floor work (poor me  :) ).  So, I went onto do the first 2 combos.  Boy, is she a hoppy one!  I wasn’t able to jump w/ as much enthusiasm as Tracy, but I did my best and it gave me a great cardio WO.  I think after the baby, I’m going to alternate doing her dance cardio w/ some light running, indoor biking and rowing machine.  Should keep me from getting bored.

Okay, for those of you who have learned past the first 2 combos… are they easy to learn as Combo 2 or are there some difficult ones?  Want to get myself prepared.

I am scheduled to do the Mat up to arms tomorrow and will do something cardio as well.  I have to schedule in WOs these days as I tend to get tired and lazy.  If it’s in my calendar, I will do it.

I finally got the Mat WO and did it for the first time.  I do really like it.  Not feeling anything with the standing abs?  Maybe it takes a bit to get the form right.

The arms, good grief, I could barely get through the unweighted part.  I used cans for the weighted part as I haven’t had a chance to get weights yet.  I can’t imagine being able to do this with 3lbs!  has anyone here gotten to that point yet?  how long did it take?

Hi workinprogress,

I can get through the unweighted arm part.  Took me about a week.  The weighted part… egads!  Especially towards the end where you are holding one arm out shoulder height and moving the other arm… kills me every single time.  I’m about to go down and kill myself now.  Hang in there.  It does get easier but then you can always make it harder by making the moves more powerful and controlled.  We are crazy!

I can make it through the unweighted arms section without stopping, but not the weighted arms - yikes - those kill!  And I am only using two pound weights!  Like ECW I do fine ’till the part at the end with one arm extended and the other working - then I have to drop the extended arm!

On the standing Ab work, that is definitely something that comes with time - probably the first 6 - 10 times I did the workout I didn’t really “feel” anything when doing that section.  These days I am careful to really hold my abs as tautly as possible while doing those, and I definitely feel my muscles working and feel a bit sore after I finish.

I had a mini breakthrough today and was able to get through the entire standing legs routine without having to pause and shake out my legs, so hooray.

LOL.  what weight are you using, ecw?  how frequently are you working out and have you seen some results?  I must say TA has beautiful arms.  It is motivating to believe my arms might somehow resemble that, lol…  also are you feeling something with the standing abs?

I just saw your post doerflinger!  How long have you been doing the workout and how frequently?  I don’t even think my cans I used today were 1lb so i can’t imagine even 2lbs!  it sounds like you are doing great!!!   thanks for your advice on the standing abs.  I just tried going back and forth small with my abs really taut and I think that will make the difference!!

I’m using 3 lb. weights.  Just got done doing my WO.  Doerflinger, I cannot get through the weighted arms w/o dropping that darn outstretched arm, too!  One of these days we’ll report back here and say, “I did it!”  I’m rooting for you.  :)

As for abs, I do them very gently as I’m almost 6 months pregnant.  When I tried full out abs, I got cramps.  Not good!  So, I just do them to “dance,” and not go overboard.

How often do I WO?  As often as possible.  I took a long time off (2-3 weeks) but now I’m back.  I just learned the 3rd dance combo.  OMG, I cannot wait to try it full out after the baby is born.  I am doing it w/ about 70% energy and it’s still hard!  I cannot imagine doing all 8 combos (there are 8, right?) 4-6 days a week!  But then, I guess the baby weight will fly off of me.

Will keep you posted.  I’m trying to keep myself from blowing up like Shamu in my last trimester.

Hi, everyone -
Back after long weekend.  I did not get in as many workouts as planned.  I did manage to do the full Mat workout (stopping here and there) on Sunday and I did the abs segment of the PP workout this morning.  I like that the PP workout is about 45 minutes even though I didn’t get to do the whole routine this morning because I woke up late.  I have such a block with hour-long workouts in the morning, I mean its only an extra 15 minutes, right?

I’ve been using 2lbs as I found the 1lb a little too light.  The last weighted arm section when you work the one arm only  and hold the other arm straight out kills me too.

The dance classes of my past are all coming back to me with these workouts.  I remember trying not to scream while holding my arms out, palms up for like 32 counts and the teacher making sure there was “energy”!  The standing abs is a typical ribcage warmup that is included most dance warmups, though Tracy goes a little bit quicker than I remember or maybe it’s just my older age?  As the Reviewer might have mentioned, it’s good for loosening up the spine and core.  And that pike segment, we use to do 100s of those, or at least it felt like it.  That was in the early 80s, then the tide turned and straight leg situps and lifts were taboo.

I have not attempted the Cardio workout yet.  It’s been easier for me to hop on the treadmill with the iPod as Tracy suggests in some of the recent articles about her workouts.
Everyone have a great evening.

I am so glad for this board here b/c I’m feeling so unmotivated to work out this week.  The last time I did the work outs was on Thanksgiving morning (4x last week).  My baby hasn’t been sleeping through the nights b/c of a cold and then I caught it.  So I just feel so worn out and it stinks!  I tried to the mat yesterday but I felt light headed.  ugh!  It’s so cold outside, lots of snow, so I really need to do this but it’s hard.  Hopefully tomorrow will be a Tracy day!  The worst part….I can tell my jeans are getting SNUG!  :S

Hi workinprogress - to answer your question, I try to work out at least six days a week, although that’s not always possible, and I know it’s going to be tough to find the time during the holiday season.  If I had to give you an average I would say I’ve been doing either the Mat workout or the Post-pregnancy workout 3 - 4 times a week, and some cardio 2 - 3 times a week (cardio is definitely my weak spot!)  I’ve been doing the Mat workout since late September, I think.  I loved it so much that I purchased the Post-Pregnancy DVD, and then a while later decided I had to try the cardio dance DVD too.  So yes, I have totally become a Tracy Anderson junky!  But I am loving how my body looks and feels with these workouts, and I am not dieting, or even being that strict about my workouts.  I think the key for me is that I ENJOY doing these workouts so much!  I truly look forward to my time with Tracy every afternoon during my kiddos’s naptime (not that I wouldn’t prefer to be curled up in bed with a good novel and cup of tea, but time with Tracy runs a close second to that!).  Enjoying working out is making it so much easier to stay motivated and stick with my little regimen.

Thanks for answering my question Doer.  I feel the same, I look forward to doing the workout (even the dance one!) and I really think it is one WO I will continue to enjoy!   It is so weird because I have been doing the dance one everyday (anywhere from 10 mins-1hr…whatever I am feeling up to) and the Mat WO one time yesterday and this morning my arms, stomach and thighs all look tighter.  Can I be imagining this?  it seems too good to be true!  I really do wonder about her whole small muscles pulling in the skin theory!!!

momof4, have you tried the first combo of Dance Aerobics?  It is so much fun!  so far that one and #5 are my absolute favs, very easy to learn.  song 4….not so much.  (ps sorry to hear you are feeling bad about taking a little break.  pls don’t be hard on yourself.  overall it sounds like you’ve been doing fantastic!)

Hello everyone!  I see a few familiar names from videofitness.com.

I have the Mat dvd and enjoy it a lot.  I haven’t done it much b/c I prefer to exercise in a class setting.  I’ve been going to The Bar Method a lot and also the gym.

I tried the Cardio Dance today.  Well, I put it on for a minute or two.  I thought it was awful.  I did watch the routines, etc.. and it’s just not for me.  I AM considering the Dance Aerobics one but I’m on the fence.

Has anyone seen any pictures of what TA looked like when she gained weight?  She mentions she gained weight (how much are we talking about???)  in her interview.  She was a dancer and yet she still gained weight and never achieved that dancer’s look (according to the interviews on the dvds).  How does that make sense?  I don’t know much about her past, her credentials, etc…  but I have read some bad things about her past online.

The whole Gwyneth thing makes me laugh.  Again, aside during her pregnancy days, has anyone seen her fat??  I just don’t see the amazing transformation.  In my eyes, she has always had a great body, that long, lean body type.  I’m one of those people who love the “before and after” shots.  I guess she got toned up and tighter.

I hope my post doesn’t come across the wrong way.  As I mentioned, I do enjoy her Mat dvd.  It’s unlike anything I have ever seen.  But, I just wonder about her educational experience, etc…  What is her background?  Why are people listening to her?  Just b/c of Madonna and Gwyneth??

Hi spainishcurls, I do understand what you are asking.   The only thing I can say is that since it’s different from what I’ve been doing in the past (The Firm) and it’s got a dance vibe to it, I find it fun and unique.  I haven’t seen much like her.  I also am kind of tired of lifting the heavy weights, squats/lunges/dips and this is so different from that.  I started her in Sept and I have results.  Not as fast as I want and I will continue to question her skin going back to the muscle on my stomach (had 4 kids and ballooned with each pregnancy) but I’m still working at it.  I do have lines and definition and I got down a few sizes.  I think people are excited about her b/c it’s a dance workout.  I did buy her first one and she says on that one she studied with some pilates guru for an extended time and her son is I think about 12 or so and she started researching all this when she got pregnant.  I don’t even know if I’m answering your question, Reviewer would be better since she also has a dance background.  I still have yet to accomplish the dance dvd 4x/week.  It really kicks my butt!

Thanks for replying momof4.  I’m a mom to two little girls myself.  I’m just very curious about her background and the basis of her claims.  Like many others, I’m drawn to her philosophy since I also crave that lean, long look.  I’m petite but also very muscular, so I hear what you are saying about The Firm.  I used those in the past as well.  I’ve been laying off heavy weights and relying on The Bar Method.  I will probably start using the Mat dvd more.

I wish I could master her Cardio Dance but I was so turned off.  I do enjoy dancing and hey, I do well in Zumba but hers seemed really challenging.

I do have to say I like the Mat.  I also have her post pregnancy one so I alternate those 2 throughout the week.  Then I add the dance or treadmill or elliptical for 30-45min.  Then I’m exhausted.  :)  I completely agree with you on the dance.  I got it in Sept…tried it and failed miserablly.  Got extremely overwhelmed and decided other means for cardio.  Then in later Oct I tried it again and got 2 combos down (took me a week or 2 just for that) and then kept plugging away at it.  Then in Nov. I had quit other cardio and forced myself to do her dance.  Now I find it easy to follow and I’m up to 6 combos.  I’m not doing them like her b/c she’s so friggin’ fast but I can do it.  I’m hoping in time I can do the moves better but right now I’m just trying to breathe.  :)  It’s very intense and challenging!  Each time I don’t get hurt I’m relieved.  ha!  How’d you like Zumba?    I’ve researched her myself, she has a lot of bad press on gabsmash.com but she’s been around for quite awhile.  For me, I just love her arm/leg workout and there are results.  I have a ways to go though.  :)  Welcome!!  This board keeps me motivated!

To Spanishcurls,
Hi. To the before/after pics of TA w/ or w/o weight I said the same thing in my Part 1 Mat review.  There are various levels of dance training.  The most elite are the high-end ballet bun heads that are destined for a ballet company.  They are long and lean.  From there you go all the way down the scale to a recreational YMCA hip hop class (think Zumba) and they may call themselves ‘dancers.’  I can tell you w/o knowing Tracy she has probably taken some ballet classes but not trained seriously.  So her recreational ballet/modern/jazz approach does not guarantee a dancer’s body.  Those bodies come from ballet class 6 days a week for years.  So did she get heavy?  Probably.  How much?  Probably no more than 20 pounds non-pregnant.  Still for an active person that feels like 100.
BUT, does it matter?  No.  It’s not about TA or her past…that past is gone.  All that matters is that that Mat workout does the trick big time.  I started in mid Sept. and I have actually lost all of my sausage rolls in my gut I am proud to say. My obliques are rock hard.
While TA’s Mat WO is killer, it is effortless in just lifting legs, flapping arms, etc.  It makes me want to do it everyday rather than think about squatting, lifting, push ups, etc.

Hi All - To answer spanichcurls, I was VERY hesitant to buy Tracy’s DVDs, as I too had read all the negative stuff about her out there . . . I never bought her 2007 Dance Aerobics DVD because I just figured she was some flash-in-pan celebrity sycophant.  I would NEVER buy something just because I celebrity endorsed it!

When her new DVDs came out I thought that there was no way that I would want to buy one, but I did read the amazon.com reviews, which led me here to VentPark, and our trusty leader’s (reviewer!)amazingly thourough and hilarious review, which convinced me to at least give Tracy a chance, and I am so, so, so glad I did.  For me, at least, these DVDs have been a god-send . . .I am 36, a tad overweight and still quite post-partum-ish (two kiddos, four-year-old daughter and a baby boy who is 17 months now).  I find the workouts not only to be effective, but also motivating . . .I really enjoy my time with Tracy every time I workout.  And I am seeing awesome results, without even trying too terribly hard, I am already seeing a much more taut and streamlined version of myself, which I am so excited about.

The Dance Cardio DVD is crazy-hard, there is no question.  You really have to take it one combo at a time, and be very patient.  It took me at least a week to learn the first combo well enough to be able to do it to tempo.  I’ve owned that DVD for about six weeks now, and I am able to do the first four combos (but number five looks killer!)

As to the negative rumours, I’ve always thought that “where there is smoke there must be fire” - However, if you go to Tracy’s website (http://www.tracyandersonmethod.com) you’ll find a letter from Tracy explaining how her business partner in Indiana took advantage of her naivete and ended up ruining her studio there, and then went on to start all the bad press/rumours, etc.  I don’t know if it’s true, but as much as I enjoy my daily time with Tracy I want to beleive that she is honest and as nice as she seems in her DVDs.

I don’t really care about her past, ie, what “shady” activities she did or did not do.  Maybe I’m just being nosey but I would like to learn more about her, her background, her training, etc…  I didn’t realize she had a child.  Does she mention it on the Post Preg dvd?  I would think that she would promote it, look at her abs!

On her site, she talks about her dad having a Danny Devito body type and even though she had great skills, she was told to “fix that body” in order to make it as a dancer.  I would love to see what “that body” looked like.  Is anyone else curious??  Maybe something is wrong with me!

I worked in advertising for years.  It’s common knowledge in the industry that having a celeb endorse your product usually means financial gain for the company, unless you are OJ Simpson!  If she were just a “regular” trainer, she would not have appeared on Oprah.  Every time you see TA’s name, it’s usually followed by “Madonna and/or GP’s trainer”.

My questions have not stopped me from enjoying the Mat workout.  I wish I loved the Cardio Dance one and I am still tempted to get the Aerobics one but I’m not sure I would enjoy it.  I think it’s fantastic that you all have experienced such great results!  That is a true testament.  Hey, have you guys taken pictures???  Maybe you can submit them to TA!  How cool would that be?!?!?!

I’m with spanishcurls on this one.

Her method is great and it is helping me achieve a body I always wanted. I’m not particularly concerned about her ‘past.’ I’m sure that all of those people who have anonymously spread internet rumours, etc, about her also have pasts. Who cares? Her body is great and mine gets better each time I do the workout.

PS- doerflinger2006, I’m also 36 and have 2 children- 5 1/2 and 3 1/2.  I have always loved exercise but have really upped the anty this summer.  My body type tends to develop muscle very easily and I felt I was getting too bulky.

I still wonder though, can someone really change their genetic or body type? Well, I guess it’s possible, but it must take a lot of work and dedication to do that and also maintain it.  With Madonna and GP, I am sure they follow a certain eating plan and they do work out with TA’s bands and that special machine.  I don’t think they got their body solely using TA’s dvds.

I went to a studio in NYC a couple of months ago- Physique 57, after seeing the Nov issue of Shape magazine with Kelly Ripa on the cover (she was in my class- so nice!!!).  Then I discovered The Bar Method studio that is a lot closer to my house.  Both studios recommend using 2-3 pound weights for the upper body segment and then your own body weight for the bottom half.  Then you have all those ballet style dvds, etc….  Clearly, it’s a big trend right now.
