Tears of Joy!

I went to bed crying and I got up with tears streaming down my face. I’m sincerely overjoyed and I just can’t stop. There is so much that comes to mind ,I’m hearing so many things right now, my thoughts are running together. I’m reminded of the great philosopher John Locke’s words “To love our neighbor as ourselves is such a truth for regulating human society, that by that alone one might determine all the cases in social morality.”

I hear Martin:
“In a real sense all life is inter-related. All persons are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be. This is the inter-related structure of reality.”

My heart is full. On this day 68 years ago, Americans elected Franklin Roosevelt to a third term. It was a perilous time and he felt he needed to stay and serve his country . The day of his inauguration, he spoke these words:

“The basic things expected by our people of their political and economic systems are simple. They are:
Equality of opportunity for youth and for others.

Jobs for those who can work.

Security for those who need it.

The ending of special privilege for the few.

The preservation of civil liberties for all.

The enjoyment of the fruits of scientific progress in a wider and constantly rising standard of living.

These are the simple, the basic things that must never be lost sight of in the turmoil and unbelievable complexity of our modern world. The inner and abiding straight of our economic and political systems is dependent upon the degree to which they fulfill these expectations.
Many subjects connected with our social economy call for immediate improvement. As examples:

We should bring more citizens under the coverage of old-age pensions and unemployment insurance.

We should widen the opportunities for adequate medical care.

We should plan a better system by which persons deserving or needing gainful employment may obtain it.

I have called for personal sacrifice, and I am assured of the willingness of almost all Americans to respond to that call.”

That was over 60 years ago and here we are yet again and the “basic things” remain the same. As all know by now, I am a true Obama fan, and last night we made history! All of us who got it right! Our new President stood as a reflection of what a true America and world looks like a beautiful diversity that recognizes our “singular stories and our shared destiny.” I’m so inspired by everyone who got engaged, came out and made this happen. All Americans, Republicans, Democrats, Independents, our work is not done, not by a long shot, we have to stay “fired up”, “aware” and ready to hold this administration accountable. I believe in President Obama, at the end of the day ours is a government “of the people, by the people, for the people” and we must not forget it. Yes we can! effectuate real change, we just did. I say we all show up on 01/20/09, and let our President know we’re in it for the long haul.
