The Change We Need: Education in America

Our children are the most important seeds we plant. They are constantly growing, developing or blooming right before our eyes. At each stage of their development, it is imperative for them to acquire specific skills. The future is seriously riding on this election. It’s hard for me not to tie the current “educational crisis” in with this upcoming election. As my grandmother would say “the proof is in the pudding.” Under the current administration,”No Child Left Behind” has essentially failed and is in desperate need of reform. I don’t understand how anyone can stand on a platform of “Family Values” and veer so far away from them. The word “Values” is so important when dealing with people but especially children. It’s at a very young age , when we, parents and educators teach them about having respect for themselves and others, encourage them to always work hard to reach their full potential and the importance of education. This election could mean a true change of our educational system, funding for early childhood education (Obama’s Zero to Five Plan). Early Childhood Education is critical and provides the building blocks for a student’s success in the future. This election could mean a salary hike and other incentive programs for teachers, this would boost morale, therefore increasing enthusiasm, compassion and resourcefulness in classrooms around the nation. This election could mean an overhaul of our healthcare system. “Healthy kids are Happy Kids” and much more productive students.

After reading the below articles, I was shocked to learn about the growing drop-out rates and the stagnant development in some cities in the U.S. I read an article in the Washington Post last week about a program created by Harvard economist, Roland Fryer paying students to meet certain standards such as “good attendance, behavior, and grades.” I’ve engaged in debate as to whether or not this is a good idea. On one hand it is definitely an innovative approach, however does it take away that personal drive that should be developing within every child to want to learn, that curiosity that should exist. In this day of serious economic hardship, it may be a great plan. I just don’t know. I agree with John Dewey “that education, therefore is a process for living and not a preparation for future living.” I will be voting for my daughter’s future. I’m voting for REAL CHANGE - Obama/Biden ‘08
